The EV issue

Later this week, I’m collecting our first EV, made possible by the Motability scheme- and no, it’s not a “free car”.

But there’s one thing that worries me, the wild west of public charging. Charging facilities come in many flavours, with the most prominent being inaccessible.

I’m seeing accessible parking spaces being removed to install EV charging bays. Added to this the poor access of so many of these facilities – this means we doubly can’t use them.

In some cases there’s a real risk of being boxed in if anyone else decides to charge at the same time. Then there are chargers like this one

– on a kerb, on a plinth and surrounded by a rail. In fact I can’t reach the card reader from my wheelchair.

Honourable mention to Tesla which are consistently the worst facilities for disabled drivers – in my opinion – no shock when you see the man behind it.

This is new infrastructure, yet so many companies choose to build us out of it  I’ve personally reviewed over 30 EV facilities, with loads more to come – and nine out of ten times, they’re useless to me.

Charging at home is fine but sometimes I’d like to go more than 200 miles from home. An additional issue is that public facilities can often be as much as 10 times the expenses of home charging.

Something needs to change, and soon.
