Today I’m celebrating Sons of Dystrophy, a side project I started during the pandemic with two friends across the water in Canada.
Brad of My Becker Story and Clay of Cognizant Clay. Brad and I live with Becker Muscular Dystrophy, and Clay with Duchenne.
At the start, we wanted to create a page that connected people across the world who live with different forms of MD.
We wanted a name that was cool, catchy, and clearly showed our intent to build a community.
In the end, we came up with Sons of Dystrophy, a play on the titular gang from the TV show Sons of Anarchy. Motorcycles are cool, as is the imagery that goes with them, but more than that, the idea of motorcycle clubs having regional chapters sparked a question. What if each form of MD was its own chapter?
Not only are we encouraging people to claim their chapter, but we’re also making it easier for people to find others with the same form of MD. That diagnosis journey is scary, and we don’t want anyone to go through it alone.
At first, we posted daily content, but it proved to be a tall order alongside work and health issues. So we took a new path, with regular Friday features celebrating the people within our community.
Through this, we’ve connected people, made friends, and built something really special.
I’m proud of all our small group has done and will continue to do.
If you don’t already, please follow SonsOfDystrophy on Facebook or Instagram, interact with some posts, and even tag some of your MD legends.
