Footprints
I quickly untied my laces, pulled off my well worn boot
Removed my sock, raised my leg and stamped my foot
To leave the last footprint of any man, there upon the soil
The time for simple pleasures past, now’s the time to toil
We’ve set fire to our home, we’ve stripped her of her beauty
Built citadels of her bones, we’ve failed in our true duty
Now mother earth is slumped and dead, our future lies in space
We have no means to bury her, we are the human disgrace
Setting sail
Our mother is but a marble, one of eight or nine
Her distant sibling deemed a runt by greater minds
An arid pearl rolls below, painted orange and red
As hell described in books that will remain unread
And yet he still has family, whilst I now exist alone
With fuel in my tank, hope my heart, no clue where I’m going
Through the glass, I hear the stars whisper ancient verse
That speak of birth and life and death, they invite me to rehearse
The black hole
As I compose a symphony, with my new celestial kin
Alarms sound, consoles flash, and starlight starts to dim
All at once my craft is consumed by a super massive maw
This is where my mission ends , ignorance a fatal flaw
There are two potential outcomes, a crushing death or Einstein-Rosen’s bridge
I exist at the mercy of theory, of science, I signed up knowing this
Contact
Sirens sounds, and lights go out and silent prayers are prayed
I chose no god, now I choose them all and hope that I’m saved
I emerge in a strange atmosphere with clouds of pink and blue
I land without harm upon a shore, one of those gods is true
I’ll never know which one, I thank them all the same
Their blessing now binds me to foreign soil, where I shall remain
—
As I ponder my predicament, I hear distant strings and song
All at once foreign and familiar, I start to hum along
And through the door, a troop of four, strange troubadours I see
Bipedal bulbous beings with skin of green
Who seem to be singing just for me
Their lyrics ringing clear
Through the glass I hear
Dear child of the heavens, from thy Great celestial womb
Tales foretold of your coming, as the end to our ruin
That you’d bring us principles and power, allow our kin to thrive
Our fates entwined forever, oh great sage of the sky
I spend days with these strange beings,
Cosmic coincidence allows us to converse
I explain the word I came from
Of how we stripped it bare
I offer lessons and technology
Means by which to tame the land
As a token of their gratitude
They place a guitar in my hand
And we perform
Ballads to new beginnings
Odes to the old and new
We compose a soundtrack
To the great things yet to do
And I accept my place
As this planet’s architect
To construct a world built on
Love, compassion and respect
As I begin to fade below this foreign sky
I remember my dear mother, beautiful and wise
I hear her tell me, now a child, son you won’t believe
The splendor beyond that door, all for you to see
Your purpose is to leave a kind legacy behind
For those who walk that winding path to find
To show all men are flawed, to remind all men to try
To leave little more guiding footprints behind,
As the last human dies, I pray I’ve redeemed our sins
Our civilisation had to end, for another to begin
