Today I’m grateful for the fact that we can all make a difference, and that there are many ways we can do this.
Dystrophy Dad started as a force for good, a way to show that a life with MD is a life worth living, while still being honest about the darker side of the experience.
Living with a disability can be isolating, and I wanted to do my part to push back against that.
And you know what? It worked. I’ve heard from countless people with different types of MD who’ve said something I wrote helped them, or that giving my time made a tough moment a little easier. And those same people have helped me right back. Many have become close friends.
One person who deserves a special shout is my good friend Jono Whitehead .
He’s there when I need him, never judgemental (well, maybe a little), and through the simple act of being himself he’s made a real difference in my life.
In September, we met to give a joint talk at a Muscular Dystrophy conference in Newcastle, encouraging others to get involved in disabled sports.
I know that my day job makes a difference. Travelling and documenting my trips on EuansGuide.com helps show what we’re capable of.
The 300 plus reviews I’ve written across Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales give other disabled people more options and opportunities.
Even as I write this, I’m in Newcastle for my one year check-in after volunteering for a medical trial last December. I signed up for this trial not to find a treatment for myself, but to help future generations.
We can all make a difference to the world, and most of the time we don’t even realise we’re doing it.
